DigiScore Concert as Part of Encuentro Montrealia, Mexico-Canada, (April 23-25, 2025)
Encuentro Montrealia was a collaborative music event held at Mexico’s Centre for Music and Sound Arts (CMMAS) and ENES Morelia, partnering with Quebec’s leading music technology institutions including Matralab, GRMS, UQAM, and Concordia University. This initiative created a dynamic platform for learning, creative exchange, and dialogue about contemporary music composition through both academic and artistic activities.
The event featured the participation of the DigiScore project and its Canadian partner Sandeep Bhagwati from Concordia University. Three international composers were commissioned to create innovative works for string quartet and multimedia:
Divergencias by Sofía Matus (Mexico) - A 10-minute interactive digital score using TouchDesigner to synchronise visual elements (fire/water/hand motifs) with live string performance, creating a dialogue between seen and heard material.
Situated Geomorphologies by Gabriel Gendín (Argentina) - An 8-minute immersive work combining string quartet with cactus, field recordings, and VR technology to explore ecological connections through ancient Argentinian landscapes.
Line Drawings by Andrea Agostini (Italy) - A 10-minute algorithmic composition using Max software that blends live quartet performance with evolving electronic textures.
The world premieres of these works were performed by a specially assembled string quartet of musicians with extensive experience in orchestral, pedagogical, and contemporary performance practice. The event successfully pushed boundaries in musical and technological innovation while stimulating international artistic exchange.

For example, Andrea Agostini’s piece involved real-time notational feeds and sliders controlling musical parameters, creating a feedback loop between composer/conductor, performer, and score.

Shared Sonic Territories and Visual Worlds: Gabriel Gendin’s project emphasized ecological and territorial connection, where sound materials and gestures in VR formed a sensory link between performers, audience, and environment. Even when one performer was isolated via VR headset, connection was maintained through a shared in-ear reference track and mutual response to sound textures.

Performers had to interpret these dynamic visuals in relation to timing cues and ensemble balance, with crossfading and visual flickers guiding transitions.

Technical Coordination as a Factor in Performance Flow: The discussions revealed how technical logistics like timer synchronisation, individual screen displays, and hardware constraints directly impact the flow and coherence of digital score performances.
